Until the middle of the 19th century, the Au ,at that time on the outskirts of Munich, was the area which accommodated craftsmen and labourers. Today it is a popular residential area which has been able to maintain its own particular charm. In many streets there are still historical buildings, small corner shops and arts and crafts businesses. For decades the "Auer Dult" market has taken place 3 times a year on the square of the Mariahilf Church. Traditionally there are stands there with china, antiques and bric-a-brac.
